"What Would Martha Do?" - Jill Schachner Chanen
While eveyone's favorite home-makeover messiah is doing time (and penance) in the big house, your home is suffering for her sins. (Goodness! Are those plastic flowers on your dining room table?)
Luckily, devoted Martha Stewart acolyte Terry Ledford is here to lend a hand.
Inside the White Attic, Ledford's tiny shop, you'll find a selection of impeccably refurbished antique chests, tables, and dressers. Each piece is handpainted in creamy whites or pastels. And, much like Martha, Ledford leaves no detail unattended. Furniture is painted front and back. The insides of drawers are finished in contrasting hues or covered in funky vintage wallpaper. Plus, custom orders are now available.
You can also choose from a cozy cashmere, cotton, or wool throw, Voluspa candles, and fantastic ceramics (both vintage and new) - any of which will give your home the attention it's been craving.
Or at least tide you over until the Second Coming.

"Sales Check" - Christine Houde
The cream-colored, shabby chic furniture that composes the inventory of White Attic (5408 N. Clark St.; 773-907-9800) delighted us with unusual touches, such as an unexpected burst of bright pink inside a dresser drawer or the luscious white velvet that upholstered a sofa. "This isn't a hard store to figure out," says owner Terry Ledford. "It's happy, it's colorful. It's full of little pick me ups." What is not detectable to the uninformed eye is that most of the pieces actually come from Andersonville: Ledford acquires many of the vintage pieces from nearby Brownstone Antiques (6328 N. Clark St.; 773-381-9800), rewires lamps at Cas Hardware (5305 N. Clark St.; 773-334-5943), uses a neighborhood woodcutter, and picks up supplies at Thybony Wallcoverings (5440 N. Clark St.; 773-561-2275). "Andersonville is fabulous. I do everything here-get my eyes checked, buy dog toys…Wait, my glass cutter is technically in Edgewater. Is that OK?" Well, Andersonville is technically a part of Edgewater. So, yeah.

"Old is gold"
If antiques is what you're looking for, look no further. This place is a treasure trove of chests, tables, and dressers. Everything you find here is artistic and beautiful, and will lend that perfect old world charm to your living room. The scent from the Voluspa candles sold here is as terrific as the price (they cost $21 as compared to $27 in your usual department store). All in all, this place is a must go for all those wishing to add that zest to their houses.
